--Hello; new guy here. Curious if anyone has been messing with those new Chinese mini-sanrails; i.e. offroad gokarts. I'm drastically altering one and would like to share war stories with anyone who's been there, done that, or contemplating same..

Re: Modding a KPX?
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 12:29 AM--Well so far I've transplanted steering, gas and brake to the top of the rollcage. What I'd like to do is to mod the engine for use in really fine dust by adding a larger air cleaner. I'd also like to add a big-ass alternator instead of the little wimpy one that's part of the package. Here's an older link to the mess in my driveway that shows details of modified driving position: www.nmpproducts.com/artcar0508.htm -

Re: Modding a KPX?
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 11:42 AMi believe the link i gave you would be the best place to ask qtns about mods and possibly where to find parts. -

Re: Modding a KPX?
Sat, August 5, 2006 - 6:56 PM--Thanks, I've been investigating it. However, after hooking up the battery and giving the key a twist and not getting the engine to fire today I'm getting nervous! I don't suppose any of you are within "house call" range of Santa Rosa are you?? -

Re: Modding a KPX?
Wed, September 6, 2006 - 12:35 PM--Problem solved; it was the carburetor: the float valve piston was stuck in the narrow tube it should slide freely within. This has now happened twice, including once at Burning Man this past week.
--Now for the new problems! In the past week the following things have happened:
-Key broke off in ignition, but a guy showed me how to get it out with a neat tool called a key extractor.
-Fuel leak for unknown reason; I suspect dust screwing up the vacuum flow control but haven't had time to investigate. The leak was seen dripping out of the end of the Uni air filter.
-Car wouldn't start, even with charged battery. Problem appears to be dust in starter motor causing brushes to lose contact; will have to detatch and examine soonest to see if that's indeed the case.
-All in all I'm finding it hard to imagine one of these Chinese things being terribly reliable for anyone, anywhere . Admittedly things were pretty harsh where I spent last week but I'm beginning to think of the whole offroad kart thing as a huge mistake. At present I'm looking for a way to replace the powerplant altogether, upgrading to an engine that has parts that are a little easier to find. Any suggestions appreciated.
